Welcome
Councillor William John Montgomery serves on North Down Borough Council and represents Abbey Area.
This is the latest version of my web presence, below are a number of issues with comment.
I hope you enjoy the experience and will visit often.
New Playgrounds
I am pleased to see Council investment of £250,000 in new playgrounds for Bloomfield, Breezemount and Rathgill. This investment indicates that the needs of the children in the three areas are being taken seriously by Council. Whilst being absolutely delighted with the investment I am saddened that Whitehill has not been included where a substantial upgrade of the facilities are needed. Perhaps however, Council will now make good on indicated promises to extend Skipperstone Community Centre and upgrade the kitchen facilities now that the roof has been replaced. Nonetheless it is good news which is to be welcomed.
McCausland Visit
It was with great pleasure that we welcomed Sports Minister Nelson McCausland to the site of Northern Ireland’s new 50m Olympic-sized swimming pool today where construction work has now started. Having appointed Farrans Construction Limited as the main contractor just a week ago, we are delighted that they have moved onto the site so quickly and look forward to seeing concrete progress made on this significant building project over the next few months. This new facility will be a tremendous local legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and deliver long-term economic and sporting benefits to the people of North Down and the wider Northern Ireland community. Much hard work has been put in by Council Members and Officers to secure the funding for this project and develop the plans for the Olympic pool, as part of a new leisure complex at Valentine’s Playing Fields. I would like to thank the Minister and his Department, along with Sport Northern Ireland, for their continued commitment to the delivery of the pool project.
Leisure Centre
I am intensely proud of our Council officers who have driven this project, sometimes against all the odds with demoralising setbacks, to the imminent sod cutting. This project is not only a shining example of what can be achieved on behalf of North Down but Northern Ireland as a whole. This new leisure facility will be of tremendous benefit to our residents, both young and old, including the many clubs who will make use of its numerous facilities, it is an asset in which we will have collective pride.
Camerata Ireland
Riveted to the spot is not perhaps the normal flowery adoration attached to a world class musician, but for someone more accustomed to venting anger at dog fouling, I hope to be forgiven. I was, after all, frightened to move for fear of missing a single wonderful note from Barry Douglas. The Camerata Ireland evening at Clandeboye was one I will always remember. Nothing can prepare you for a close encounter with this magical musician. The dynamic range alone had me making comparisons with the best audio systems, certainly an ipod isn’t going to make a Steinway wobble. Therein lies the advantage of live music, without doubt, in the intimate setting of Clandeboye. For me the appreciation of Barry Douglas was not in the thunderous applause but in the absolute silence at music intervals. An audience, like me, utterly captivated.
